From the beginning of the Vineyard movement, worship expressed through music has been a major characteristic of our family. Within this, there are three main values that we hold dear: intimacy, integrity and accessibility. These values underpin our approach to worship, both in the sense of how we conduct our everyday lives and also in the practical expression of our worship though the singing of songs.
Intimacy in worship is one of the foundations of the Vineyard movement. For years, Vineyard worship around the world has been marked by songs that are simple expressions of love and devotion. When we gather to worship, we expect every time that all present will have an intimate exchange with God. We expect His Kingdom to break in at any moment as He heals, delivers and transforms us as broken people.
Integrity simply means wholeness and naturalness – a consistency between private and public life. God doesn’t want us to come to Him as we think we should be, but as we are. We come as we are but do not stay as we are, for we cry out for His mercy to change us.
There is a strong emphasis on our songs being simple and melodic, to help us find a clear way to lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus. We aim to be culturally relevant in musical style; we do not want our music to be dated. Likewise, we seek to make our church language as accessible as our street language, much in the way that the writers of the New Testament did.
